End-of-Life Care Background
Dr. Ryan was drawn to end-of-life care several years ago when she saw the difficulty her family had at the bedside of a dying relative. It occurred to her that others' must experience similar difficulties. She sought to learn as much as she could by attending meetings and taking part in training programs focusing on end-of-life care and death and dying issues. She also served as a volunteer with Providence Hospice of Seattle for five years in patient care and bereavement care services. She pursued studies with the Sacred Art of Living Center in Bend, OR and completed the two-year Anamcara Apprenticeship program. This program added to her training and experience in end-of-life care.
Working with people at the end of their lives has been very enriching for Dr. Ryan on many levels. While "companioning" each of these very unique individuals, she observed that those who passed away more peacefully made space for contemplative work which allowed them to resolve painful issues from their lives.
